CompEx Ex Awareness (ExA) Course

The CompEx Ex Awareness (ExA) course provides fundamental knowledge for anyone required to work in or around hazardous areas where potentially explosive atmospheres may exist. Ideal for non-electrical personnel and site visitors, this course promotes safety awareness and ensures delegates understand hazardous area risks, zone classification, ignition sources, and safe site behaviour. Delivered by CSI’s experienced hazardous area specialists, the course reinforces a safety-first culture across all industries.

Who This Course Is For

This course is suitable for personnel who work on or visit hazardous sites, including:

Mechanical, civil, scaffolding and maintenance teams
Contractors, site visitors and delivery drivers
Supervisors and project managers
Warehouse, logistics and procurement staff handling Ex equipment
Apprentices, new starters or anyone needing basic hazardous area awareness

No previous CompEx experience or electrical background is required.

Course Content

This awareness-level course provides a foundation understanding of hazardous areas and safe working practices, including:

What is an explosive atmosphere?
ATEX, DSEAR and IEC hazardous area principles
Hazardous area zoning (Zones 0, 1, 2, 20, 21 & 22)
Common ignition sources and risk awareness
Introduction to Ex equipment and marking
Safe behaviours and PPE in hazardous environments
Control of work systems and permits
Site safety responsibilities

Assessment & Certification

Assessment is carried out through a short knowledge check at the end of the course. Delegates who complete the course will receive:

CompEx Ex Awareness (ExA) Certificate
Formal recognition of Ex safety awareness training
Certification issued by CompEx

This qualification demonstrates essential understanding of hazardous area risks and responsibilities.
